Farewell Sweet Shamu

Shamu, our feral barn kitty was laid to rest recently.  Not sure what she contracted, but she wasn't able to beat it.  We thought she was getting better and even appeared to be improving.  It wasn't to be.  So sad to say good bye to yet another one of our beloved children.

Shamu showed up at a neighbor's house one day and was terrorizing her cats.  She asked if we could take her and of course, we said yes.  She has been a faithful barn servant and even managed to make her peace with Black Jack.

Her spot was on the top of the wrought iron table where her meals were "delivered" daily.  She tried bringing me a few dead things - but I promptly reminded her that "I don't accept dead gifts."  Fortunately, she understood my meaning and that was the last of the gifts.  I'm sure she still killed things, just didn't deliver them to me.

Here are a few pictures from our last visit.

It's Pete - I'm on Vacation

Pete here.  Remember me?  I spent about six months or so with my Peggy Mom, Daddy Joe, Momma Ellen and Daddy Rich.  Then, since I went away, you might not have thought I was coming back - but I wanted to let you know - here I am!
One day, everything is going just the same as normal and then all of a sudden, Peggy Mom, Momma Ellen and Miss Norma Najorka from Pawsitive Action Foundation were all there and they were making a big fuss over me.  Went went on a pretty long ride and then we made a left turn and we were there!  At the Easter Seals Camp Challenge.  If I've told you some of this before, forgive me, but I want to tell the whole story.

So we get out of the car and what do we see?  Signs and people and everyone is really happy to see me!

So Peggy Mom, Momma Ellen and Miss Norma, they start talking with Miss Maggie, she's the camp director and they are making all kinds of plans about me - like I'm going to get to go to camp or something.

It looks like a really cool place, so maybe I will get to do something really neat!  I hope so.

We got to go in Miss Maggie's house and then there were all these new toys and lots of instructions about what to do, what not to do, blah, blah, blah.  I lost interest after a while and I was just playing with my toys.  Then there was also a little boy named Jay and he seemed super cool - hope I'll get to play with him when everyone is done talking.

Then suddenly, Peggy Mom, Momma Ellen and Miss Norma left - they got in their car and they didn't even ask me to come or wait of me or anything.  Then I was just with Miss Maggie and with Jay.  I'm going to have to let them tell you part of the story because I was so overwhelmed, I've forgotten some of it.

Miss Maggie was really nice.  She said I could sleep on her bed.  I tried, but you know, I really prefer to have some privacy and sleep in my crate.  So finally, Miss Maggie got me a crate and now I sleep really well.  Here's a picture of me trying out the bed.
But I really did want you to know that I've had a terrific time at Camp Challenge I met all kinds of people and they were all really really nice to me.  Here's a few pictures from my album.
A few days ago, Miss Maggie said she had to go on a business trip and I was going to get to go and visit my Peggy Mom, Daddy Joe, Momma Ellen and Daddy Rich.  I'm so excited.  She took me to Peggy Mom's office and I was very very excited to see everyone.  Then we went to Peggy Mom's and there was Tobie and Fawn and Sassy and Leiden - I missed them all.  Here's a picture of me in the car.
I'm having a really good time and I can't wait to tell you more about what I did at camp this summer.  I'll check back in after Miss Maggie gets back and I can get the go ahead to tell what we were doing - might be top secret and I don't want to get in trouble!  See you soon.  It's me Pete.

With love to Kira

So far, this has been an incredibly tough year - we've already lost Corkie, Bangle and Sierra.  So, this week wasn't any easier when we had to lay Kira to rest on Monday July 1, 2013.
A couple of weeks ago she suffered some sort of a neck and spine injury - not sure why or even how.  We treated her with traditional medicine with no improvement.  Then, we started working with Dr. Jennifer Freeman, All Creatures Mobile Veterinary doing acupuncture and adding some herbs and other pain relievers.  At first it seemed like it was going to help but she continued to decline.

Dr. Jenny visited on Saturday June 29 and determined that additional treatments would probably not provide any significant improvement so we administered a pain relieving treatment and made the decision to enjoy our weekend and then let her go on Monday.

Kira, also known as Stinky, was truly one of the best dogs ever!  We have loved her since she was 8 weeks old - a rescue from Pet Rescue by Judy. She never did one single bad thing in her entire life!  She was a mentor to the younger dogs and loved to play with everyone.  She was sweet, loving and kind.  She will always be a big part of our heart.  We miss her terribly but we are grateful for our time with her and that she is now pain free and in peace.

Pete Goes to Camp Challenge

What an exciting day!  I'm off to my newest adventure.  I wasn't sure what was going on earlier this week when my Norma friend came and picked me up and took me back to Pawsitive Action Foundation farm where I used to live.

I was wondering if this had anything to do with Friday's trip to the Family Cafe conference for families with disability located at the Hilton on I-Drive.  There were lots and lots of people there.  But there was one special lady, named Maggie Denk, who really really loved me.  She and Peggy mom started talking about the possibility of me going to camp?  What's a camp and what do I get to do there?

Anyway, Norma friend came and got me and then the next thing I know I'm back at Peggy mom's office and Momma Ellen is there and we all got into Daddy Joe's big red truck and went for a drive.  Momma Ellen and I sat in the back.  We drove for a pretty long time and then we arrived!  There were lots of people waiting for me and they had signs and everything!  They seemed super happy to see me, so I guess camp is going to be fun.  I heard them say that the name of this camp is Camp Challenge and a whole bunch of people are coming to camp this weekend!  I can't wait!

I saw a pool, I got a lot of presents (hey, maybe it's my birthday?), and everyone wanted to take a turn to walk me around, pet me or lie on the ground with me.  I was a little overwhelmed but not too bad.  I think this is going to be a really good time.  Oh and I almost forgot the best part, I get to have my own little boy - his name is Jay and he is six years old!  You can see him in the picture below.
I'll definitely keep you posted about what is happening.  You can check out the facebook pages and websites for both Pawsitive Action Foundation and Camp Challenge for more information about me!

They cashed my check!

When you adopt a dog like me - Sassy - from a rescue organization like Sunshine Corgi Rescue they don't cash the adoption check until after a two week trial period.  Well, my trial period ended on Saturday night so I'm guessing yesterday - unless Peggy and Joe told them something I don't know about - they cashed my check!

That means I'm officially a member of the Hoyt-Allen pet household!  I'm super excited.  Now I don't have to be on my very very best behavior!  Lol!  No really, I still plan to be good.

Last night after dinner I was so excited about being a permanent member of this family that I was just talking and talking and talking.  Both Peggy and Joe were laughing at me - couldn't figure out what was so darn funny!  Anyway, I hope you have a great day - I know I will.

Upset Tummy Weekend

First thing that happened is Tobie got sick - as if that wasn't bad enough, then I got sick, three times!  Not sure what we ate that didn't sit right but boy did I feel yukky.

Best part was I got to spend the whole day outside since Peggy didn't want me to get sick in the house.  It was a beautiful weekend and I played with Tobie, Fawn and Sassy.  That Sassy sure can run - you wouldn't even know she was old.

In Memory of Corkie

On Sunday, April 21, 2013, we planted a memorial tree in Corkie's honor.  We found a beautiful bottle brush tree that will mark her place in our hearts forever.

Bottle brush trees attract hummingbirds.  Corkie was always such a busy little bee.  Every time we see a hummingbird, we will think of our Sweet Cork!

Sassy the Mermaid

This is my first week at my new home.  We arrived on Saturday night - I think Peggy and Joe and Leiden (the little white dog) must have had a long day.  They arrived after dinner and we left my foster home immediate to get on the road.

When we got to the house, there was such a commotion.  It seemed like there were dogs everywhere!  They were so happy to see Peggy and Joe and very interested to meet me!  At first I wasn't sure about all the attention but Peggy let me get out of my crate, and let everyone introduce themselves while I was in the truck and actually taller than everyone.

Then I got out of the truck and everyone was really nice.  I think I'll like it here.

Sunday we just hung around the house and played.  It was fun.

Monday, Peggy took me for a car ride to her office.  I enjoyed meeting everyone she works with.  Things were going really well until this big giant black dog showed up - his name was Pete.  I barked at him, he barked at me - there was a big commotion.  I guess I scared him away because he left right away and didn't come back.

On Tuesday I stayed at home.  I didn't have to stay in my crate though - I stayed in the master bathroom.  There was this really interesting little door in there and I managed to figure out how to pull the lock off.  I didn't go out the door but I sure think I've figured out how it works.

Wednesday I stayed home again.  I could tell that Joe tried to fix that lock, but he didn't do a very good job.  I got the lock off, then tore that little door right off the wall.  Yipee, I'm was out of the bathroom and outside!  Oops, not really outside, just on the pool deck.  Yes, there was a pool - a big beautiful pool, with lots of water.  I decided since no one was home, I would just take a little swim.  I swam around and around - a little back stroke, a little butterfly, a little breast stroke - just a fee laps,  then got out, shook myself off and sunned for a little while.  Then I heard Joe's truck and I quick jumped back through the little door and into the bathroom.  Maybe he won't notice what I've done???
I heard him tell Peggy the story when she got home for work - she seemed really scared.  She said she was so happy that I could swim and didn't drown, whatever that is.

Anyway, on Thursday, they let me stay in the whole bedroom including the bathroom.  That was great - I slept on Fawn's big bed all day.  I did check out that little door as I thought I might go for another swim.  Joe fixed it good this time - its covered in sheet metal and has a bunch of screws in it.  Anyone got a screwdriver?
